Cycas calcicola This population grows near Katherine in the Northern Territory of Australia. The specific epithet
is derived from the latin calcareus, pertaining to lime, with the suffix -cola,
a dweller or inhabitant, in reference to the occurrence on limestone outcrops.
However, there are other populations nearby growing on sandstone also.

Cycas conferta growing in the southern part of Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory, Australia. The
habitat is open sclerophyll woodlands and very dry and hot. Having visited and experienced conditions here, it becomes
quite clear to the observer why Australian Cycas species do not do well outside its habitat.

Burning cycads: you have to be cruel to be kind.
These cycads (Encephalartos humilis) were set on fire in an experiment
performed at the Lowveld National Botanical Garden, Nelspruit. This was done in
an attempt to see if the cycads would be stimulated to cone following a fire
event. After they were burnt, the cycads produced beautiful new foliage and the
scientists are now waiting anxiously to see if this had any effect on coning. (Photo:
